Congratulations to Linda F for winning the HST blocks. There were 31 blocks.
This month the block has a goose for a roof! You will need three tone-on-tone coloured fabrics for the house, white for background, and a black-and-white print for a border. Please choose three colours that you think go well together and that will make a joyful house.
There are a few people in our guild who like house blocks, so, I thought to try one. This house is adapted from the Sherbet Town house in I Love House Blocks from That Patchwork Place. It also allows for the use of a flying goose so it is within our theme.
Feel free to change the block’s lines. Change the sizes of the parts of the house or make them wonky. Also feel free to embellish. You might like to add a window, flowers, or … . As long as the overall block inside the border measures 8 1/2″ unfinished. Keep in mind that this may end up in a quilt that will be used and washed, and, have fun!

MATERIALS
1 – 4 1/2″ x 8 1/2″ rectangle for the roof
2 – 4 1/2 x 4 1/2″ squares of white background
2 – 1 3/4″ rectangles of white background for sides of house
1 – 1 1/2″ x 6 1/2″ rectangle for above the door
1 – 2 1/2″ x 3 1/2″ rectangle for the door
2 – 2 1/2″ rectangles for the sides of the door
2 – 1 3/4″ x 8 3/4″ black and white strips for the border
2 – 1 3/4″ x 11″ black and white strips for the border
ASSEMBLY
Draw a diagonal line on each of the two 4 1/2″ white background squares. Place one 4 1/2″ background square on one end of the roof and sew along the diagonal. If you would like a spare HST from what will be cut off the corner, sew another seam 1/2″ away from the first seam and towards the corner. I did this on my sample. Cut between the seams.
Do the same on the other corner.
You now have a goose for the roof. And, two HST’s for a future project.
To construct the house sew the sides to the door. Then sew the piece above the door. This is the door for my first block sample and it is shorter than the door on my second sample. The pieces given above make the door a bit taller again.
Sew the background pieces to the house.
Join the roof to the house. The house part will probably be a bit larger than the roof piece so centre the roof and trim after sewing. This part of the block should measure about 8 1/2″ square.
Add the borders to the house block. I made the border pieces wider and longer so that they can to trimmed to size.
Sample one and two
Bring your blocks to the April meeting and you will get a ticket for each block for chances to win the Block Lotto.
